The Wheel Illustration (Part 3)

The Navigator wheel illustration is a helpful reminder of the basics of the Christian life. We examined the central hub, which maintains the strength of the wheel. This foundational hub represents the centrality of Jesus in the life of believers. Jesus is the foundation of the Christian life (1 Cor. 3:11-17). We find our strength in Him (Eph. 6:10). Therefore, the basic posture of a believer is to depend upon Him. We fix our eyes upon Him as He is the author and perfecter of our faith (Heb. 12:2).

And then, we examined the bottom vertical spoke, representing the Scripture. The Scripture consists of the 66 books of the Bible written by multiple authors. And while human authors contributed to the writing of the Bible, there is another Author, namely, God Himself. God inspired the human authors by His Holy Spirit . Therefore, the written Word of Scripture is no less than the very Words of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The Word of God is living and active (Heb. 4:12). Ultimately, all of Scripture points to Jesus as the Hero in God’s plan of redemption (Luke 24:27).

Now, let’s look at the top vertical spoke representing prayer. Prayer is talking with God. And by virtue of being adopted into the family of God according to the gospel, believers have a relationship with God in Jesus (Eph. 1:5). Therefore, we talk to Him. Communication is basic to any relationship. We grow in relationship through communication. And it is no different with our relationship with God. We pray to Him as a child would talk to his parent. We can go with confidence because of His grace (Heb. 4:16). The very presence of God nurtures us with His peace (Phil. 4:6-7). What a privilege to talk with the God of the universe at any time! We are invited. Won’t we spend time with Him?

The Navigator wheel illustration reminds us of simple yet profound biblical truth of our relalionship with God as believers. So let us be reminded of Christ the center and the importance of the Word and Prayer as means of grace in our life. How easily we forget! So let us remember. We’ll look at the fellowship spoke next time.
