The Wonder of Advent

The arrival of Jesus is wondrous. The Infinite became an infant. The King made Himself vulnerable. The Perfectly Strong became weak. This wonder exceeds our comprehension. Hence, we need time to reflect on the enormity of advent each year. Better yet, each day. And as we do we further recognize its divine signature so unlike our own.

For example, we like promotion - in our careers or social standing or economic status. It is good ascending to the next level. It is progress. And it feels good to receive a letter of promotion stating a higher position with more benefits and compensation. Most people, barring any exceptional objection, would accept. How many would opt for a demotion? Of course not! Who would want to move in the opposite direction?

But this is the wonder of Advent! Jesus chose demotion. And this servant trajectory isn’t something merely for our admiration. It is to be in us. Philippians 2:5 says , “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.” As we think about the wonder of Advent, let’s pray that this wonder will be ours. May our mind reflect the humility and selflessness that Jesus showed us in the gospel. May the divine signature of Advent be characterized of us!
