Rest in Jesus

Rest is important. Yet we are prone to neglect it. We just have too many things to do, right? And so we become overwhelmed. In our weakness, as our supposed superiority vanishes like a mist, we are, again and again, confronted with the obvious fact that we are not God. We are limited. We need rest. And in those moments of sobriety we attempt to rest. We head for the hills. We turn off the phone. We go for a walk. And these, among so many different ways of resting, are vital.

Though there is an aspect of rest that we should remember. While turning things off and getting away are very important, let’s remember how rest relates to a person. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, “28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” We can truly rest when we rest in Jesus. And so we can find rest wherever we are, whatever season we are in, and at every moment of the day. True rest is when we can rest in His promises by bringing to mind the promises in His Word. True rest is resting in His love. It is when we can rest in His sovereign plan. It is when we can rest in His gospel. Let us rest in Jesus.
