Advent - Week Two
"There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God." John 1:6-13
How amazing that God incarnates on this earth as the Son! The Creator enters into the midst of His creation as a child. He is fully man and fully God. And John the Baptist was sent to proclaim this grand entrance of the light into the world.
There can be no greater blessing than Jesus drawing near to people. We have a void in our heart that nothing can fill but Him. He is our wisdom. He is our joy. He is our purpose. But John makes clear a great irony. Jesus is so great! Yet the people did not recognize Him. Moreover, the people rejected Him. How tragic! There can be no greater gift than Jesus, yet people turned Him away. How sad! Though everyone did not reject Jesus:
“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
This is a wonderful promise. Whoever believes in Jesus are adopted into the family of God. This forms the deepest identity of Christians. They are, at the most basic level, children of God. May we grow to understand more and more what this means. We are so loved, so cared for, so helped in Christ. Christians are children of God!
Reflect
How do you see yourself? A failure? A weakling? Be who you are in Christ! Who might that be? A child of God. You are loved so much. You belong. You have been accepted in Christ.
Pray
Dear Jesus,
Because you came on this earth, out of great love, we can become children of God by faith in You. Help us to place our faith in You. We are weak. But you are strong. Thank you! Amen.
